Friday Beer: Old Potters Brewhouse “Plaas Japie” Saison

The type of brewery we are featuring this week is one we love to write about. It’s an enthusiastic, relatively young brewery who is producing great beers and working hard to make sure people know about them. Based in Greyton we are of course talking about the Old Potters Brewhouse. We’ve spent a fair bit of time with them recently and thought it would be a great opportunity to find out a bit more about them. And, if you get to the end of this post, you might even find out how to win tickets to the Fools and Fans Festival taking place on the 7th of April.

Old Potters Brewhouse

The Brewery

Based in Greyton in the Western Cape the brewery got off the ground in 2016 to become part of what is one of the oldest buildings in Greyton (over 150 years old). And one of only two national monuments in Greyton. About 100km from Cape Town it is a fantastic spot with no shortage of character. Or beer. The brewery is owned by Trevor Gerntholtz who, outside of being a world-class Liver Doctor, spends his limited free time there. The brewery is run by Tatenda Chivaura, a tremendously cheerful individual who is more than capable of putting together a cracking brew.

The Beer

Like a lot of breweries Old Potters Brewhouse produce several standard beers and a once off here and there. We’re featuring their “Plaas Japie” Saison this week but their full line up includes:

  • “Plaas Japie” Saison (Obviously)
  • “City Slicker” Pale Ale
  • “Flower Child” India Pale Ale
  • “Rooinek” Amber Ale

While we were at the brewery they also pulled out a “Saison de Gobos”. We won’t get into details because we would probably get it wrong but another tasty beer out of the brewery. You won’t be able to find this one in your local bottle store however. We are up for correction, but this was a once off kind of deal. A little touch we particularly like is that each and every beer is signed and dated by the brewer.

So, give the Old Potters Brewhouse “Plaas Japie” Saison a go this weekend and let us know your thoughts! Don’t forget that you could stand a  chance to win a case of Urban Brewing Co’s Monkey’s Paw Pilsner and swag from Dogfish Head and The Boulevard Brewing Co (details here).
