Another brewery coming out of Woodstock and producing some really tasty beers is Ukhamba Beerworx. Lead by Brewer Lethu Tshabangu, they have been making waves in their brief existence. We dropped into the brewery to see what they had done and to meet Lethu. We’re glad we did. A fantastically humble and passionate brewer.
The Brewery
Ukhamba took over the space at The Palms in Woodstock previously used by Riot. You remember them, we featured their Valve IPA in December. Lethu got the brewery up and running in 2017 and has since become a firmly established member of the Woodstock brewing community. The name itself originates from a tradition amongst the Nguni people in South Africa. It was custom for the tribesman to gather and share umqombothi from a clay pot called a Ukhamba. So, “when you are enjoying a beer with friends and strangers, you are celebrating the traditional legacy of the Nguni people”.
The Beer
Lethu is currently brewing three beers out of the little brewery in Woodstock. Being based at The Palms they are a prime spot for after work drinks for people in the area. What this means is that beers are consumed almost straight out of the fermenters – they are super fresh. And they don’t last very long so you really need to get them early. At the moment Ukhamba Beerworx is producing the below:
- Pursuit of Hoppyness Black IPA
- Utywala Sorghum Saison
- State Capture IPA (tell us you didn’t grin reading that name)
