Beerhouse on Long Turns 5

The beer scene in South Africa has come a long way over the last few years. One of the biggest supporters of this has been Beerhouse on Long, and given it is their 5th Birthday we thought a bit of recognition was deserved. We chatted to founder Randolf Jorberg on how it all happened.

Happy Birthday! 5 years of Beerhouse, how do you feel? Accomplished and challenged. We managed to be a good part of the (craft) beer revolution in South Africa, but also there’s still so much to do and conquer.

Where did it all start? At a night out in town in Germany… I was explaining beer varieties and their stories to my then-girlfriend at a beer bar in Heidelbergand and realized, that there was no similar place in Cape Town. A few beers later I registered the domain name, pointed it at a newly created Facebook page and announced the business to my Facebook friends and the rest is history…

How many Beerhouse’s are there now in the country? While I believe we’ll have 20 in the foreseeable future, we are actually back to 2, after we had to close Beerhouse Centurion after struggling to try make it work for 18 months. We now have all equipment for a Beerhouse readily waiting in storage and are super busy finding the RIGHT location for that. And others.

You’ve clubbed the last 5 years, what are plans for the next 5? Painting the world yellow!

One thing you know now that you wish you had known when you started? How rewarding, but also how challenging the industry can be. Our doorman Joe Kanyona was murdered in 2015 which was devastating. But we have also experienced intense happy moments; people falling in love with beer, beer lovers falling for each other, and helping homeless cleaners making a career in beer, we have had it all!

So, with the 5th Birthday kicking off Beerhouse on Long has a calendar of events to get involved with. Click the banner to be taken to the Facebook event for more details.
