Friday Beer: Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA

We hope you might still be able to pick up this beer when this post goes live but even if you can’t, we’re happy to put it out there. This week’s Friday Beer is the independently imported Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA from the States. We will be honest, this wasn’t our first choice to feature but the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was an eye watering R83.99 per can and we simply couldn’t stomach it on the day.

Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA

Saying that we are by no means unhappy with this week’s Friday Beer. The Sierra Nevada Brewery is one of the top breweries in the States and, as of 2016, is the 7th largest brewery in the States. Impressive for a brewery whose roots were two blokes with a home brewing kit in 1979. And there is a good reason they have achieved what they have, the beer is good.

With a couple of independent importers into South Africa (predominantly in Cape Town from what we can tell), this is an occasion beer. At R49.99 per bottle you’re not going to spend an entire afternoon clubbing them (or maybe you are?). Given the price point and the very limited quantity, this is one of our favourite kind of beers. It’s one you won’t drink alone. It’s one that you will crack open with one or two other friends who really appreciate beer to share.

Unlike us to suggest such things but we promise you will enjoy it that much more. From the Sierra Nevada website the beer is described as:

Sierra Nevada and hops go hand in hand. What began as a crazy idea scribbled in a pub eventually became our newest year-round hop bomb, Torpedo Extra IPA. The first beer to feature our “Hop Torpedo”—a revolutionary dry-hopping device that controls how much hop aroma is imparted into beer without adding additional bitterness. Torpedo Extra IPA is an aggressive yet balanced beer with massive hop aromas of citrus, pine, and tropical fruit.

We do hope that you manage to get your hands on this beer. And we hope even more that you will share your thoughts and pics with us.

Available from Liquor City Claremont and Roeland Liquors at time of writing.

Cheers!
