With 35 degree days hitting Cape Town the need for ice cold Lagers is well upon us. Although, if Cape Town has its way we will have the horizontal rain on Saturday afternoon. Regardless, this weeks Friday Beer is good enough for even that. It is the Hermanus Brewery Old Harbour Lager.

With roots not completely dissimilar to the founding of St. Francis Brewery the Hermanus Brewery was founded on inspiration from the States. Founder James Rattle and his wife Di were inspired by the small town breweries on an RV trip down the West Coast of the USA. That was back in 2000 and was enough to set the seed for what ultimately became the Hermanus Brewery in 2014.
Starting as the only brewery in the area they do now have competition from the likes of Hemel en Aarde, Birkenhead and Honingklip. All of which are within 20 minutes of Hermanus. They can however boast that they are back-to-back SANBT Gold Medal winners for both 2017 and 2018. Pretty simply said, the one-and-only beer they produce is good.
Old Harbour Beer is a clear yellow-rose easy drinking, session beer. It has a balanced depth of flavour with a crisp, passion fruity smooth finish. It is unpasteurized and has no additives, so pure goodness.
We’ve tried to visit the brewery a couple of times with no luck. It will happen eventually, and we obviously encourage you to do the same if you find yourself in that area. In the mean time make sure you pick up a couple of bottles this weekend and let us know your thoughts.
Cheers!
