Shoh, it’s been a while since the Shields Indie Brewing Co made an appearance here. We featured the Shields Indie Brewing Funk Machine IPA well over a year ago and we really liked it. At the time we didn’t know very much about Dan and his brewery so beyond saying “it’s a good beer” there was very little else we could offer. Since then we have gotten to know Dan Shields and his beers and we’re glad to have him back with the Shields Indie Brewing Co Back to Black Stout.

We’ve been hanging onto this beer for a while. We’ve been waiting for winter to arrive and it now very much feels like it’s here. And for us, this is when we like to break out the Stouts, Porters and other darker beers. Queue the Shields Indie Brewing Co Back to Black Stout that has been holding down fridge space at Barley&Hops HQ. Dan released the Stout late last year alongside an Amber Ale and a Pilsner which were welcome additions to the Indie Brewing Co range.
Truth be told we’re not into our stouts and porters nearly as much as we should be. We’re okay with that, and we’re okay admitting that. We’re also okay admitting that the Shields Indie Brewing Co Back to Black Stout had us reassessing this. It’s a very good beer and one that really did surprise us. If you can appreciate a good beer aroma this has it. Lots of coffee on the nose which fortunately carries through to the flavour.
With weather changing across the country get the fireplace going and treat yourself to a couple of Shields Indie Brewing Co Back to Black Stouts. While you’re at it pick up a couple of Dan’s other beers and let us know your thoughts on them.
