Friday Beer – Saggy Stone Brewer’s Small Batch Brut Lager

The Saggy Stone Brewer’s Small Batch Series has been something we have enjoyed since the start. So much so that Batch #002, the Weizenbock, was part of our recommended Christmas 6-pack back in 2018. It’s good. So when Liam Mc Elhinney drops a line and says there is a new one we can’t help but get a little excited. When we found out that is named the Saggy Stone Brewer’s Small Batch Brut Lager we got even more excited.

Saggy Stone Brewer's Small Batch Brut Lager

This Lager, #006 in the series, comes on the back of a Stout, a Weizenbock, a Pilsner, and Witbier. All of which we have featured here. And, on checking in with Liam we missed #005, their small batch Dubbel. Poor form on our part, we’ve no idea how we missed it. The crux here though is that all the beers have been good. Add to this that the Brut IPA series (Citra and Sabro) are a couple of our favourite beers at the moment the Brut Lager got us excited.

And we weren’t wrong. So, Liam, tell us about it.

Uumm…
Was really inspired by the wine country we live in and thought it a good idea to try and make our Brut Lager as close to a wine a possible. So we used hallertau blanc hops for all the gooseberry character that almost resembles a chenin blanc and a specialty German malt for a little oak character and still keeping it really dry, keeping to the brut style.

You don’t need to understand anything more here other than it is good. The news gets better with the fact that if you’re in Cape Town you can order directly from the brewery here.

Our suggestion, order the second Mixed Pack. It’s got 4 of each, Brut IPA (both Citra and Sabro) and the Brut Lager. Nice to try them together and decide for yourself which ones are your favourite. Get the orders in now and have them delivered in time for next weekend.
